Our expenses are modest while we get things rolling, but we have ambitious plans to grow Exoplanet while remaining frugal with our resources. Here’s how we’ll use the money from Patreon pledges and magazine sales.
Author payments
We pay our authors one cent ($0.01 USD) per word for prose and a $10 flat rate for poetry. From there, it will be an incremental journey toward an SFWA professional rate of eight cents ($0.08 USD) per word as our revenue grows.
Artist payments
We pay our artists for magazine cover art. We plan to increase these payments to market rates as funding allows.
Tools of the trade
We plan to invest in several high-quality tools, including Ghost and BookFunnel. Of course, these tools have associated costs, so our patrons and readers will be instrumental in covering those expenses.
